What is Brand Visibility Score?

Brand Visibility Score (BVS) is a weighted composite metric designed to give teams a single, comparable number that captures how visible and well-represented a brand is across AI-generated responses. Rather than requiring teams to interpret Share of Model, Citation Rate, sentiment, and competitive position separately, BVS rolls these signals into one score that can be tracked over time and benchmarked against competitors.

The score is typically calculated on a 0–100 scale. The underlying formula weights multiple dimensions: frequency of mention (how often the brand appears in AI responses for relevant queries), citation strength (whether the brand's domain is cited as a source, not just mentioned by name), sentiment quality (whether mentions are positive, neutral, or negative in tone), position and prominence (whether the brand appears early in the response or as a secondary mention), and cross-engine consistency (whether visibility is strong across all major AI engines or concentrated on one or two).

Brand Visibility Score is most useful as a trend metric and competitive benchmark. A single snapshot tells you where you stand today, but the real value emerges when you track BVS weekly or monthly. A rising BVS indicates that your AEO efforts are working; a declining BVS signals that competitors are gaining ground or that model updates have shifted the landscape. Correlating BVS changes with specific AEO actions — publishing a new comparison page, implementing llms.txt, fixing crawler access — helps teams understand which activities deliver the highest return.

The metric also enables executive-level reporting. While Share of Model and Citation Rate require explanation for non-technical stakeholders, a Brand Visibility Score of 62 that was 54 last month communicates progress immediately. This makes BVS a valuable communication tool for justifying AEO investment and reporting results to leadership teams. For agencies managing multiple clients, BVS provides a standardised way to compare AI visibility health across different brands and categories, normalising the complexity of multi-engine, multi-metric AEO data into a single comparable figure.

Context

Why it matters

Brand Visibility Score gives teams and executives a single metric to track AI visibility health over time. It simplifies multi-dimensional AEO data into an actionable trend line, making it easier to detect shifts, benchmark against competitors, and communicate the impact of optimisation efforts to stakeholders who are not AEO specialists.

Examples

Real-world examples

  • 1

A B2B SaaS company tracking a BVS of 58 across 8 AI engines, with a target of 70 within two quarters after implementing Technical AEO fixes

  • 2

An agency reporting monthly BVS for three clients, showing that the client who implemented llms.txt and comparison pages gained 14 points while others remained flat

  • 3

A product team using BVS to compare their brand against four competitors, discovering they lead on ChatGPT (BVS 71) but trail on Perplexity (BVS 33)
